The National Eye Institute has designated the month of May as Healthy Vision Month to highlight the steps we can take to promote good eye health. These are the steps you can incorporate into your lifestyle to promote healthy vision:
- Live a healthy lifestyle: eat healthy foods, maintain a healthy weight, manage chronic conditions and stop smoking
- Know your family history: talk to your family members about their eye health history. Many eye conditions are hereditary
- Use protective eyewear: protect your eyes around the house, at work, and playing sports to prevent eye injuries
- Wear sunglasses: protect your eyes from the sun's UV rays. UV rays can increase your risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration
Over 23 million people age 18 and older have never had an eye exam. Too many times we see patients who haven't had an eye exam since childhood or diabetics who aren't getting their annual eye exam. Consider making time to determine the state of your eyes - take the next step and schedule your eye exam today.
