Spotlight On: Healthy Vision Month

Healthy Vision Month is a reminder of the importance of vision in our lives.  Let's take some time to assess if we're taking steps to ensure the health of our eyes.  About 38 million Americans have common eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.  That's nearly 1 in 8 people.  And with the explosion of technology, we're using our eyes more than ever.

So are you taking steps to make sure your eyes are healthy?

  1. Get A Comprehensive Dilated Eye Exam:  A dilated eye exam is the best way to assess the health of your eyes.  No technology has replaced this crucial step.
  2. Know Your Family History:  Ask your grandparents, parents, aunts/uncles about their eye history.  Knowing your family history will help your eye doctor assess your risk.
  3. Live A Healthy Lifestyle:  Maintaining a healthy weight, eating healthy foods, quit smoking, and managing chronic conditions will help the health of your eyes.
  4. Use Sunglasses/Protective Eyewear:  Protect your eyes from harmful UV light and use eyewear to prevent injuries at work and sports activities.
