June is Cataract Awareness Month which gives us a chance to learn more about an eye condition that will effect the majority of us at some point in our lives. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the U.S. in older adults but they can be found in infants and young people as well. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. When this occurs, you'll experience symptoms like blurred vision, lights may appear dim, or it may seem like there's a film over your eyes.
What are the risk factors?
- UV exposure
- diseases like diabetes
- long term steroid use
- eye injuries
What actions can you take? Modify behaviors you can control like wearing sunglasses to limit UV exposure and quit smoking. Also, get regular eye exams so we can monitor the presence and progress of any cataracts.
We want all of our patients to experience clear, comfortable vision throughout their life. Schedule your next eye exam with us by giving us a call or by clicking the bookNOW! button for an online appointment.
